COVID-19 and Parenting Time

Throughout New Jersey, parents are grappling with how to safely share custody amidst the Corona Virus pandemic.  Quarantine presents a number of questions for families exercising shared parenting arrangements. Fortunately, Governor Murphy's March 21, 2020 Executive Order #107 provides us with some guidance.  Paragraph 2, subsection 4, permits New Jersey residents to leave their homes for the purpose of "visiting family or other individuals with whom the resident has a close personal relationship, such as those for whom the individual is a caretaker or romantic partner."    Still, there are many facts and factors that may require a family to suspend, adjust or otherwise modify their custodial or parenting schedule during this national COVID-19 epidemic. New Jersey Courts look at the specific facts of each family's situation in rendering decisions.

Despite the unprecedented nature of our current situation, New Jersey's custody laws remain the same.   However, our laws provide sufficient guidance to navigate through the challenges of the country's COVID-19 pandemic.
